Text — Genesis 14: 21-24
21And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
22And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
23That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
24Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
Key Verse: “And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoe latchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich” (Genesis 14:22, 23).
Message
Osagie Erhabor, served in the Nigeria police force. He had N800 in his pocket and earned a monthly allowance of N37, 500 which was not coming as and when due. However, he snubbed a humongous 6 million naira dangled before him so as to compromise the Nigerian government system. He faced the temptation to accept it because of his tough financial condition. However, he rejected the offer. He was persecuted, his life was threatened but at the end of the day he did not succumb. This earned him respect, trust and he became a cynosure of all eyes. He received an award describing him as the “people’s choice.”
If Satan is distributing free cash, scholarships, visas or other materials, some desperate so-called believers would grab them. Avoid unrighteous riches. Offers from dubious classmates, relations who are swindlers, well-known fraudsters or drug pushers must be rejected. It is not expedient to receive money and materials from questionable sources no matter how close they are to you. Any riches with taint of evil will stain our garment of righteousness. Godliness with contentment is key to escaping such traps.
Quote: Avoid unrighteous riches
Challenge: Godliness with contentment is great gain.
Prayer for today: Help me to reject evil wealth, oh God, in Jesus’ name.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
