19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

KEY VERSE: “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal” (Matthew 6:20)

Message

Albert Edward Brumley (1905–1977), who gained an understanding of God at a young age and recognised that life and all its blessings are fleeting and brief, wrote and composed a song titled, “This World Is Not My Home” in 1919. The lyrics of the song remind all Christians that we are pilgrims on earth. Therefore, it is wise to labour in laying up treasures in heaven, not on earth: “This world is not my home. I’m just a-passing through. My treasures are laid up. Somewhere beyond the blue…”

From our text, we see that Christ Himself taught the disciples to focus on God and heaven, enabling them to inherit eternal rewards after death. True and lasting treasures are those we gather in Heaven. This is achievable through dedicating our lives to Christ, winning souls, following up with new converts, performing acts of kindness, especially towards those in the household of faith, and similar deeds. As we continue in these, we will receive blessings here and lay up treasures in heaven for ourselves.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, help me to amass treasures in heaven.

CHALLENGE

Gather treasures in heaven.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
